Hope Church was organized in 1897 by a few members of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church who migrated to the West Englewood area in Chicago from Bowling Green, Kentucky.
Lots were purchased and the ground was broken in 1911 and the members of the church built the present edifice on the corner of 61st Street and Loomis Blvd. in 1913.
Hope is the only non-transitional; non-merged African American congregation in the Presbytery of Chicago
The longest tenured pastor, The Rev. Herbert W. Jones, ministered with great success from 1941 to 1980. After his retirement, Hope experienced a drastic drop in church membership.
In 1986, Hope Church was blessed with the arrival of Pastor Leslie Sanders who has successfully increased our membership and Sunday attendance. Pastor Sanders organized the Voices of Hope choir and re-organized the Angelic choir, was responsible for the development of various ministries; i.e., the Lincoln/Hope Head Start program; the 50 Plus senior’s group; young people’s summer work and tutoring program in conjunction with Com Ed, the Office of the Mayor and most recently with First Presbyterian Church, Lake Forest, Illinois and the Presbytery of Chicago.
His friendly demeanor made it possible for Hope to purchase a van and began a Bus Ministry, pave the parking area, and serve the West Englewood community with an every Saturday Feeding program. These programs were provided with the assistance of the First United Church of Oak Park, Illinois, First Presbyterian Church of Libertyville, Illinois, Hope Presbyterian Church, Wheaton, Illinois and Canaan Korean Presbyterian Church, Glenview, Illinois. Pastor Sanders believes, “He who would have friends must first show himself friendly.”
In 2008, Pastor Sanders with the assistant of our covenant partners and the Presbytery of Chicago established a love and support partnership to sustain a year-round Youth Ministry, expand the weekly Spanish and computer classes and added an additional supplement to underwrite the costs of the preschool, Abraham Lincoln/Hope Church Head Start program.
Pastor Sanders has enhanced our youth worship services with girl Praise Dancers and a majority boy’s Mime Team. Both have been extremely successful. The Mime Team has been requested by other churches to perform at their various church related events.
God has been exceptionally good to Hope Presbyterian Church through the years. We are thankful and look forward to the, many years of spiritual growth, faithful sharing and wonderful opportunities to serve God’s Holy purpose.

Our dynamic Pastor is a native of Memphis Tennessee. His early Christian journey began at St. Peters Baptist Church where he received his call to ministry at 18 years of age.
Pastor Sander’s theological training started at Christian Brothers College in Memphis and continued at McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago where he earned a Masters in Theology. An honorary Doctorate of Divinity was bestowed upon Pastor Sanders from Mid-South Theological Seminary of Indiana.
Pastor Sanders has a unique style of preaching which is biblically based. His sermons can sometimes bring you to tears and other times make you laugh, but always leaves you inspired and uplifted. His messages provide spiritual insights for successful Chirstian living.
As a result of Pastor Sanders' love for people, he has committed himself to civic and community service. Pastor Sanders truly believes in the transforming power of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and that the Church should serve as a catalyst for that transformation.

Hope's Safe Haven Program was established as a Safe Haven for Children in the Church and in the community. This program allows for a safe place for children to attend during non school hours.
This program designed not only to provide safety, but to provide spiritual and education growth opportunities for our children.
First Presbyterian Church of Libertyville and Hope Presbyterian Church in Wheaton Illinois
have partnered to provide the financial support for this program.
Hope's After School Safe Haven program serves approximately 25 to 30 children each day, Monday through Friday from 2:45pm until 6pm.
The services/activities provided are as follows:
NOTE: Due to the students are enrolled in the Chicago Public School Track E system, their are some consecutive weeks when the children are out of school during the regular school year. For those weeks, Hope's Safe Haven program operates in the day time to allow the children a Safe Haven environment filled with spiritual and educational activities.
